Trim in September for more compact growth
and blooms through November.
Perennials: Plant salvias
for fantastic fall bloomers that feed
hummingbirds.
Grasses: Observe fall
displays of blooms and plumes to choose
your favorite to plant.
Daylilies, Agapanthus, Iris & Yarrow:
Divide large clumps & replant 1’ apart
in drifts. Share these friendship plants
with neighbors.
Antique roses: Mulch
with compost, stand back and watch them
perform. Cut off old blooms to just above
the first 5-leaf cluster.
Coreopsis and Louisiana iris: Divide these
spring-blooming perennials and re-plant
in drifts.
Herbs: Tuck parsley,
Mexican mint marigold and sage into flower
pots. Harvest basil and cilantro. Put
dill and fennel in a sunny garden with
lots of room.
Coleus: Pinch back overgrown
plants by half in September for fall re-growth.

Cut back by 1/3 in August or September
for shapely fall growth.
Coneflower, Black-eyed Susan, and Penstemon:
Trim off old bloom stalks or leave seed
heads for the birds this winter.
Ferns: Feed with seaweed
and fish emulsion to green up after summer’s
heat.
Pansies: Plant between
Halloween and Thanksgiving in sunny spots.
Float pansy flowers in water-filled crystal
bowls next Easter!
